How SingHealth audits hand hygiene across eleven institutions

The programme

In 2016, SingHealth's Institute for Patient Safety and Quality set up a cross-institution audit model. Trained auditors from one institution audit another, using shared tools and standards, and results go to institution leadership and the cluster's board.

The challenge

Gathering and reporting results across eleven institutions took time. An independent review by MOH Holdings' group internal audit division recommended that the programme make more use of each institution's own audit data.

What changed

In 2020, SingHealth launched a cluster-wide hand hygiene audit app built on Semmel SafetyOS.

  • Cross-institution results became available instantly.
  • Every institution also runs its own internal hand hygiene audits on the same platform, so the institution-level data the review had asked for became available too.

The programme's results

Over six years, SingHealth's programme raised cross-institution hand hygiene compliance from 90.2% to 96.9%. These results belong to the programme as a whole: its people, training and leadership. SafetyOS is the platform that captures and reports the data.
